Phone or EVP Recorder? Compare Your Recording Setup

You can use either a phone or a dedicated audio recorder for an EVP session. Choose the setup that reliably records, exports and preserves understandable audio in your conditions. Neither option detects spirits or proves that an unfamiliar sound has a paranormal source.

Compare the workflow, not the label

“EVP recorder” usually describes how a recorder is used. A phone with an ordinary recording app can document a session too. Before buying equipment, compare the features you actually need and test the device you already have.

Question Phone recording app Dedicated recorder
Can you export the original file? Check the app’s export options and cloud settings. Check USB transfer, removable storage and file formats.
Can you monitor live audio? Depends on the app, microphone and connection. Depends on the model and headphone output.
What processing is active? Inspect voice isolation, enhancement and other available options. Inspect gain, filters, limiters and recording modes.
What can interrupt a session? Test competing audio apps, available storage and battery limits. Test power, media capacity, file limits and automatic recording settings.

Test a phone before a field session

  1. Make a short recording with normal speech, a quiet pause and one clearly announced movement.
  2. Confirm that the microphone is unobstructed and the file includes the full test.
  3. Note the app version, recording mode and any processing options.
  4. Export a file, reopen it on another device and confirm that it plays.
  5. Keep a separate backup before trimming, enhancing or sharing clips.

Apple’s Voice Memos guide describes recording with built-in or supported external microphones. It also notes that another app playing audio can stop a Voice Memos recording, and that enabled iCloud syncing keeps recordings updated across signed-in devices. Check the guidance for your own phone and software version; those details do not apply to every Android or iPhone app.

When a dedicated recorder may help

A separate recorder can free your phone for navigation or emergency communication. Physical controls, removable media and a suitable headphone output may also make your workflow easier. Verify each feature in the exact model’s manual rather than relying on a “ghost hunting” label.

For example, the Zoom H1essential manual explains its headphone monitoring and WAV recording options. Those are equipment capabilities, not evidence that it records paranormal voices better than another device.

Make a fair comparison

Place both devices securely near one another without touching. Record the same spoken test, room ambience and announced handling sounds. Log their positions, settings and start times. Compare the full files at sensible listening levels before applying effects.

Different microphone placement and processing can produce different recordings. A sound appearing on one device but not the other does not, by itself, establish an unusual cause. Repeat the test after changing one factor, such as distance or orientation.

Protect privacy and review carefully

Get permission to enter and record, tell participants what will be captured, and check applicable U.S. recording rules. The Reporters Committee recording guide explains why state law and the type of conversation matter. Consider cloud access and location-based filenames before sharing recordings publicly.

Use our EVP session checklist, document events in an evidence log, and follow the audio review workflow. Preserve the native recording, invite independent listening without suggested words, and leave uncertain sounds unresolved.
