Lavalier vs Shotgun Microphones for Ghost Hunting



The microphone that makes your introduction sound clear isn’t necessarily the microphone you want documenting a quiet room. That’s the central choice in lavalier vs shotgun microphones for ghost hunting: are you recording the investigator, or a sound source away from the investigator?

For spoken commentary while moving around, a properly fitted lavalier is usually the practical starting point. For a person or area you can deliberately aim toward, a shotgun may fit better. For general room context, don’t overlook a stationary recorder you already own.

This is a use-case comparison based on microphone design and manufacturer documentation, not a claim that we field-tested these models or that either design detects spirits.

Choose the job before choosing the microphone

These are starting points, not rigid rules. Try a short recording in the actual room before deciding. A microphone’s name tells you less than playback of the setup you intend to use.

Where a lavalier earns its place

A lavalier is a small microphone worn near the speaker. It follows that person, which is helpful when an investigator turns away from the camera to describe a doorway or take notes. It also gives the editor a dedicated record of what that investigator actually said.

Many lavaliers are omnidirectional, but check the specific model. RØDE’s Lavalier GO, for example, uses an omnidirectional capsule and a 3.5 mm TRS connector. Being small or wearable doesn’t automatically mean a microphone is directional.

The catch is contact. Before the session, record yourself turning your head, moving your arms, bending down, and handling the gear you’ll carry. Listen for rubs or bumps. If the microphone or cable touches fabric, reposition it and repeat the test. A noise you deliberately reproduce is much easier to identify later.

Keep this track labeled as investigator audio. It is useful context, but a mic attached to a moving person isn’t a neutral record of an otherwise untouched room.

What a shotgun does—and doesn’t do

A shotgun is designed for directional pickup. RØDE describes its NTG2 as highly directional and specifies either P48 phantom power or an AA battery. Those details illustrate two important checks: where the microphone is aimed and how it receives power.

It isn’t an audio telescope. Don’t assume mounting a shotgun on a camera across the room will isolate a faint sound beside a distant door. Bring the microphone closer when access and the recording plan allow, and compare that result with the camera-mounted position.

For an investigation, write down its location and direction. “Microphone facing the stairwell from the south corner” is useful. “Shotgun running” leaves the reviewer guessing what the setup was intended to capture.

Check connections before buying adapters

Build a complete connection list: microphone, cable, receiver if wireless, recorder input, and required power. Similar-looking sockets do not prove compatibility. Check microphone-level versus line-level input, connector wiring, and the manufacturer’s power instructions.

Don’t assume a passive plug adapter turns a recorder’s small input into a powered XLR input. Conversely, don’t apply phantom power just because the recorder offers it. Verify the exact microphone and adapter combination.

A lavalier can be wired directly to a compatible recorder; it doesn’t have to be wireless. If you choose wireless, document the transmitter and receiver and test the link before settling into a quiet session. Record any dropouts as equipment events, not unexplained voices.

A useful two-track arrangement

Our suggested small-team setup is one track for spoken documentation and one stationary track for the room. Name them clearly, record a shared spoken session identifier, and keep a visible or audible sync marker where permitted.

That separation can help answer an ordinary but important question: did someone on the team make the sound? Don’t mix the channels together and discard the individual files. Keep the recordings separately so you can compare the same moment on each.

If you only own one recorder, start with it. A planned position, a short movement test, and clear notes may solve your actual problem without another purchase. Your microphone budget should follow a limitation you can demonstrate.

Listen first; interpret later

Use comfortable playback levels and preserve the raw files. If you clean a copy, document the processing: Audacity’s Noise Reduction manual warns that processing can damage wanted audio and introduce artifacts.

Then follow a consistent EVP review process, including independent listening without suggested words. Clearer speech is a recording improvement. Identifying where it came from remains a separate task.
