Good EVP recorder settings help you capture a clear record of a room, including the ordinary sounds that are easy to overlook during an investigation. Start with uncompressed PCM WAV, continuous recording and a short listening test before the session. Set levels for the room you are actually in, rather than copying someone else’s gain percentage.
There is no verified recording setting that detects spirits. EVP, short for electronic voice phenomena, describes recorded sounds that listeners interpret as possible voices. This checklist is about documenting audio carefully and keeping enough context to judge what you hear.

EVP recorder settings: the quick checklist
These are suggested starting points for ordinary field recording, not a universal preset. Your recorder’s available controls and the surrounding noise determine what works.

1. Choose a useful recording format
For this workflow, choose PCM WAV at 44.1 or 48 kHz. Use 24-bit recording if your device offers it, but do not replace a working recorder just because it records at 16-bit. A quiet placement and a clean test recording are more useful than chasing an impressive specification.
Keep the original format when you copy files for review. Converting a compressed recording to WAV later does not restore information that was already discarded. If your recorder only offers compressed formats, select its best-quality option and document that limitation.
Before leaving home, record a short sample and transfer it to the computer you will use for review. Check that it opens, plays at the correct speed and contains the entire test. Finding a file-transfer problem at home is far easier than discovering it after a long night.
2. Set gain using a test, not a percentage
A gain value such as “70 percent” does not mean the same thing on every recorder. Microphone sensitivity, distance and room noise all affect the result. Put the device in its intended position, then speak from where you expect to sit.
On a conventional recorder with a dBFS meter, a practical test is to keep normal speech peaks around -12 dBFS, leaving room for louder sounds. Watch for overload warnings and listen back. Audacity’s recording documentation recommends approximately -6 dB as a maximum peak target in its setup workflow; the quieter starting point suggested here leaves additional room for unpredictable field sounds.
Do not turn gain all the way up simply because the room is quiet. Compare two short tests at different levels and listen for hiss, distortion and handling noise. If your recorder uses a different recording system without a conventional gain control, follow its own manual instead of trying to force these controls onto it.
3. Keep the quiet parts of the session
Turn off voice-activated recording for this checklist. The aim is to preserve the sequence of events, including pauses before and after a sound. A recorder that starts and stops at a loudness threshold makes those gaps harder to assess.
Check the recording timer after pressing Record. Some devices first enter a standby or armed state. A lit display alone does not tell you that audio is being saved.
Use a manageable session length, such as ten minutes, for your first trial. Announce the room, session number and people present at the start. Afterward, confirm that the file runs for the expected duration.
4. Compare filters before relying on them
For the first baseline, disable optional voice enhancement and noise suppression where possible. Save that recording as your reference. If the room has persistent rumble, make a separate test with the low-cut filter enabled and note the setting.
A filter changes the material available for later review. That can be useful, but it should be a deliberate choice you can describe. Keep the recorder position and speaking distance consistent when comparing two settings.
Post-processing has limits too. The Audacity Noise Reduction manual explains that noise reduction can damage wanted audio and produce artifacts. 5. Give the microphone a stable position
Place the recorder on a secure stand or stable support. Keep it away from clothing, loose straps and objects that participants might touch. Leave the microphone openings unobstructed.
Make a deliberate reference recording of familiar noises: a jacket moving, a chair creaking and a footstep nearby. Label them aloud. These samples give you something concrete to compare against an unfamiliar sound later.
If possible, move away from fans, appliances and open windows. Do not switch off equipment you do not own or control. Instead, note what is running and where it is relative to the recorder.
6. Run this five-minute pre-session test
- Check power and space. Confirm the battery indicator, free recording time and selected microphone input.
- Announce the setup. Say the recorder model, room, file settings and who is present.
- Record one minute of room sound. Ask everyone to remain still and quiet.
- Record normal speech and known noises. Use the same distances planned for the session.
- Play the file back. Listen through headphones at a comfortable volume before continuing.
If the recording is distorted, silent or dominated by rubbing sounds, solve that problem first. Change one thing at a time and repeat a short test. That makes it easier to identify which change helped.
7. Preserve context when reviewing possible EVPs
Copy the original recording before editing. Keep a full-length version and put any processed clips in a separate folder. Label exports clearly, such as “original excerpt” or “noise-reduced listening copy.”
When a sound stands out, write down its timestamp before deciding what it means. Listen to the surrounding section, compare your notes and check whether another participant or device recorded an ordinary cause.
If you ask someone else to review a clip, let them listen before showing your suggested wording. An uncertain sound should remain uncertain in your report. An unexplained recording is not, by itself, proof of a paranormal source.

Questions about EVP recorder settings
Should I use maximum microphone sensitivity?
Start with a test at the actual recording position. Choose a setting that captures normal speech cleanly without overload. Maximum sensitivity is not automatically the most useful choice.
Can I use a phone instead?
Yes, as a starting point for documenting a session. Check its recording app, export options and whether it applies automatic processing. Make a full test with the phone configured exactly as you plan to use it.
Should I remove all background noise?
No. Keep the original recording intact. If you process a listening copy, use restrained changes and compare it with the original. Removing more noise does not necessarily make an ambiguous sound more trustworthy.
What should I upgrade first?
Identify the problem before shopping. A stable mount may solve handling noise; a better position may reduce background sound.
